Tricky and magical pranksters, Leprechauns are somewhat solitary male creatures that have made quite a name for themselves in Irish folklore. Although no taller than a boy of about 10 years or so, the Leprechaun has a wizened, old face like a "dried apple" punctuated by a dusty red beard. While fairly stout and broad-shouldered, the Leprechaun is surprisingly quite quick on his feet making him his a tough little bugger to catch. Legend says that Leprechauns are cobblers by trade in the fairy world, although oddly enough, they only make one of each type of shoe. If you hear the faint tapping of tiny hammers, you know that a Leprechaun is near. Each Leprechaun has his own pot of gold hidden at the end of a rainbow or some other secret spot that only Leprechauns can reach. In the pot, one gold coin for each year of the Leprechaun's life waits for the lucky mortal who can outwit him. If you capture a Leprechaun he'll take you to his pot of gold and offer it as a bribe for his release. But beware, these little guys are known for being magical and tricky; the second you take your eyes off him, he'll disappear. In May 2006, an NBC affiliate in Mobile, Alabama ran a new story on a Leprechaun that residents of the Crichton neighborhood say they witnessed scurrying up a tree. An amateur police-style sketch was released, the video hit youtube and the whole story ended up being parodied on South Park. Who cares if it's an urban legend, where da gold at? Notre Dame, Boston Celtics and Lucky Charms cereal all use the image of a stereotypical Leprechaun as their mascot. Leprechauns have a reputation for being foul-mouthed, are known to swig drink from their ceramic jugs, and smoke pipes (dudeens) that are quite foul smelling. The signature suit of a Leprechaun is quite popular around the month of March, as Leprechauns are associated with Emerald Isle, especially on St. Patrick's Day.
